CRITICAL ADVANCED LISTENING
This book is designed to enhance students’ academic listening skills through engaging and thought-provoking topics that connect language learning with real-world knowledge. Divided into four thematic chapters—Healthy Lifestyles, Psychological Secrets, Environmental Challenges, and Economic Issues—each unit integrates authentic listening materials sourced from TED-Ed, providing learners with exposure to natural spoken English and meaningful content.
Each chapter includes structured activities that guide students through the stages of listening: pre-listening, while-listening, and post-listening. The pre-listening section activates students’ background knowledge and prepares them for comprehension. While-listening tasks encourage focused listening through exercises such as gap-filling, true/false statements, and multiple-choice questions. Post-listening activities foster higher-order thinking through summarizing, paraphrasing, and critical discussion.
In addition, each unit features a targeted grammar focus that relates directly to the listening content, helping students reinforce important language structures in context. A glossary at the end of the book supports vocabulary development and comprehension.
This book promotes integrated language skills, critical thinking, and learner autonomy. It is intended for intermediate to upper-intermediate learners in higher education who aim to develop their listening proficiency for academic and real-world communication. By the end of the course, students will be better equipped to understand complex spoken English and to articulate their thoughts with greater clarity and confidence.
